Newcastle Computer Repairs Directory
Newcastle Computer Repairs Directory
Depending on the industry you are in it can be quite beneficial to find some key business directories to be listed in. So for example if you are a florist you might list on some wedding directories. Try to pick directories that are easy to find in the search engines so that you get the best value for money. Higher rankings = more visitors = more potential clients.

taking photographs for websites
If you are taking photographs for websites just leave the camera the right way up, ie the shutter button on the top unless you want to spend time cropping images or you are happy to have the website software crop them for you in which case it doesn't matter too much either way.
The thing is, most computer screens are now in widescreen format (yes there are a bunch of different resolutions but on average, people are buying pc's with screens that are the same aspect as tv screens, thats whats cheapest and best value for money in terms of inches per dollar), and the trend is towards full hd, so 1920 x 1080 px which means landscape proportioned photos are great, they scale well so that you end up with an image that is maybe 1000px to 1200px wide and a height or 100 to 300px.
It's really hard to make a combination of landscape and portrait photos look good in a web photo gallery, you either end up with a bunch of people with heads cropped off or you get irregular shaped thumbnails.

get listed on google maps local listings
Getting your business and website listed on the google maps system so that you have a chance of showing up when people do a location based search is a really good idea, if you haven't done this already, start here: http://www.google.com/local/add/
lots of fonts to choose from
There are some terrific options available to us for putting fonts onto web pages now, things have come a long way since the days of making buttons in various colours and special fonts or creating headings as images. Two popular choices for using fonts on websites are:
- Google fonts system: http://www.google.com/webfonts - www.jezweb.com.au uses this
- cufon: http://cufon.shoqolate.com/generate/ - we used cufon on www.storyofmylife.com.au

custom favicons
There are lots of tools to create these but the simplest one I have found is at dynamic drive,
http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/
There is a lot of terrific website addons at dynamic drive, i have been using it almost since i started creating websites.
You can upload your logo or picture and it is condenses to a 16 x 16 pixel ico file ready for putting into your website via ftp etc.
I have used one on www.jezweb.com.au as an example.

Cool stuff to add to your website
I'm going to dedicate this blog to all the cool, neat, clever, handy stuff that you can put on your website to make it look better and be easier to use. This won't be just about all the random stuff that some people might suggest you put on your site like those stupid shout boxes and stock tickers.
My aim is to only pick things that businesses would use on their website and I will try to make sure we have used it on one of our clients websites as well. You can find out more about our web design company at www.jezweb.com.au - its possible that if i have referred to someone on a website we have built that it could change in the future, i'll try and remember to update a post if that happens.
Let's start off with possibly one of the most popular website addons, the google map, we use this pretty often, even on our own site, http://www.newcastleinfotech.com.au/contact/
There is a similar setup available for the msn maps based on whereis, but i really don't think its as good or user friendly as the google maps one.
Here's an example of the msn one. http://www.spearandfish.com.au/contact-us/
All the code and api stuff for google maps is here: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/index.html
We often use a plugin in wordpress or just use the standard embed you can get when looking at the map.
